JAMESTOWN, N.Y. — A full weekend of events, including a World Record Grape Stomp attempt and an evening of comedy with Bob Newhart, are set to take place Columbus Day Weekend in Lucille Ball’s hometown of Jamestown, N.Y., during the Lucy Town Half Marathon & 5K, Oct. 11-12. The second annual Lucy Town Half Marathon & 5K is presented by Chautauqua Striders, Jamestown Savings Bank Arena and The Lucy Desi Museum & Center for Comedy. Among the weekend highlights are:
World Record Grape Stomp Attempt (Sat., Oct. 11; noon)
Lucy fans and grape stompers will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for Most People Grape-Stomping (Oct. 11). Lucille Ball, a Jamestown native, stomped grapes in the famous “Lucy’s Italian Movie” episode of I Love Lucy, and Western New York is home to the largest grape-growing region east of the Rockies and oldest Concord grape region in the world. A vat the size of a city block will be created for this event with 60 tons of locally grown Concord grapes filling it.
An Evening of Comedy with Bob Newhart (Sat., Oct. 11; 8 p.m.)
Comedy legend Bob Newhart is the featured performer of the 2014 Lucy Town Half Marathon & 5K weekend (Oct. 11, Reg Lenna Center for the Arts). Newhart, 2013 Primetime Emmy Award winner for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his portrayal of Professor Proton in the hit television show, The Big Bang Theory, continues to sell out shows. He was named one of the Top 100 Greatest Stand-Ups of All Time by Comedy Central. He is also known for his roles in the 1970s sitcom The Bob Newhart Show and the 1980’s sitcom Newhart.
2K, 5K or Half Marathon with Lucy!
The second annual Lucy Town Half Marathon & 5K will take place Oct. 11-12. The weekend features a brand new Kids’ Run 2K (Oct. 11), as well as the popular 5K Run/Walk (Oct. 11) and half marathon (Oct. 12) on a USATF-certified half marathon course.
Hockey Is Back In Jamestown (Sat., Oct. 11; 2 p.m.)
