Super Bowl Champions!

The Ellicottville Eagles Little League Midgets football team defeated the Franklinville Panthers in a defensive battle of wills with an 8-0 victory in overtime during the Cattaraugus County Midget Football League “A” Super Bowl.

The only touchdown scored by the Eagles was on a 10-yard carry by Christian Swalcy, followed up by a two-point conversion with a pass from Logan Grinols to Caleb Dubel. As per league overtime rules, the Panthers had four plays to score following the Eagles conversion, but the Eagle’s defense was able to shut them out.

“Saturday’s Superbowl versus Franklinville was an amazing experience to be involved with,” said head coach Tim Grinols. “The Panthers had a great game plan and were able to stop our offense through four quarters. The game was all about the defense. Our team created numerous turnovers, including a punt block by Harrison Newark. I could not be more proud of this team and organization. Our defense led by Clayton Rowland had times that we bent but did not break. We went into the game confident that our kids would step up and get the win after a previous loss to the Panthers. Neither team could move the ball well until a late carry by Logan Grinols. That carry sparked our offense and gave confidence to the team. Those are the kind of games you love to be involved with; it was very exciting even without many touchdowns being scored. I wish the kids that are aging out the best of luck next year in the JV program and look forward to another great season with the Ellicottville Eagles Midget Football team.”

“Our Little Eagles family has faced many adverse conditions over the past few years with the loss of teammate Emery Lafferty and the cancer diagnosis of Alex Newark, yet these boys and girls were not going to be beat down by this. They stood up and played their hearts and souls out and left it all on the field. These kids won this Super Bowl for Emery and Alex. Congratulations to Franklinville as the Titans football program looks promising,” added Ellicottville League President Todd Palmatier.

The Little Eagles will recognize both the Pee Wees and the Midgets at a banquet to be held, Sunday, Oct. 30 at the West Valley VFD banquet hall.
