See hundreds of radio-controlled aircraft fly through the skies on July 12–13, 2014, when you visit the Cattaraugus County/Olean Airport on Hatch Hill Road in Ischua, N.Y.

Every year since July 1978, the Southern Tier Aero Radio Society (S.T.A.R.S.) has held a radio-controlled model aircraft scale rally. It is one of the largest radio-controlled model aircraft scale rallies in New York State and was the first to feature giant scale model aircraft.

The rally annually attracts modelers from all across the United States and foreign countries including Canada. It features hundreds of different types and sizes of scale aircraft.

During the rally, the airport is closed to full-scale aircraft activity in order to allow the radio-controlled pilots full access to the skies over the 2,000-plus-foot grass runway.

Admission is free, and there are no pilot fees. Vendors are welcome at no charge. A $5 parking donation is suggested.

There will be full-scale Stearman rides available Friday, July 11, starting around 10 a.m., weather permitting. This is a great opportunity to ride in an open cockpit biplane. Rides cost $80 for about 20 minutes.

Free camping overlooking the picturesque valleys of the Southern Tier is also offered. There are no hookups, but the views are stunning. Bring your family!

Rally flying times are Saturday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m., and Sunday, 10 a.m.–3 p.m., with night flying for small electric aircraft only (less than 36-inch wingspan).

Preregistration takes place Friday evening, July 11, with Saturday morning registration available until about 8:30 a.m. Current AMA or AMAC required.

On Saturday, there will be an evening wine and cheese social for registered pilots and significant others.
