The Olean/Allegany area is gearing up for a great pre-holiday season with cultural, educational, shopping and just plain fun activities for people of all ages through November.

October 24 – TheatreWorks USA: “Fly Guy & Other Stories”

St. Bonaventure’s Quick Center is hosting this exciting new musical revue based on the favorite contemporary children’s books geared toward kindergarten through fourth graders. Featured stories include: “Fly Guy Meets Fly Girl,” by Tedd Arnold; “Diary of a Worm,” by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez; “Fluffy the Classroom Guinea Pig,” by Steven Lutvak and Robert Freedman; “Kitten’s First Full Moon,” by Kate Anderson and Elyssa Samsel; and “Paper Bag Princess,” by David Kirshenbaum. October 24-26 – Olean Theatre Workshop

Don’t miss The Olean Theatre Workshops presentation this weekend of “Anne of Green Gables.” The show, which opened on Oct. 23, continues on Friday, Oct. 24 and Saturday, Oct. 25 at 7:30 p.m., and on Oct. 26 at 2:30 p.m. Based on the beloved 1908 novel by Lucy Maud Montgomery, children of all ages and adults will enjoy the adventures of Anne and the rest of the characters living in a farming community on Prince Edward Island. October 26 – Autumn in Allegany Train Show

The Toy Train Collector’s Society – New York’s largest organization devoted to the collection, preservation and operation of toy trains “of days gone by,” will be hosting the Autumn in Allegany Train Show on Sunday, Oct. 26 from 9:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m. at the Daniel Carter Events Center, 2383 W. Five Mile Rd., Allegany. Adults and children alike will enjoy the train show and sale, with model trains of all scales and gauges. Visit

November 1 – Spooktacular Simulated Space Mission for Adults

The Dresser-Rand Challenger Learning Center is hosting a simulated space mission to Mars for grownups only on Saturday, Nov. 1 from 6-8:30 p.m. The mission gives you the opportunity to perform the duties of an astronaut, engineer or scientist. November 2 – The Great Pumpkin Shoot

Besecker & Coss Appliances will sponsor its sixth annual Great Pumpkin Shoot at noon on Sunday, Nov. 2 next door to its store at 1553 Olean/Portville Rd., Olean. Tickets are $15 and include a small pumpkin and use of a large slingshot. Additional pumpkins may be purchased for $5 each. Proceeds will support a local non-profit organization. Visit

November 15 – JCC Holiday Marketplace Craft Show

The Jamestown Community College Alumni Association is sponsoring a Holiday Marketplace Craft Show on Saturday, Nov. 15 from 10 a.m.–4 p.m. in the College Center on the JCC Olean campus. November 15 – Friends of Good Music Presents Avante

The Friends of Good Music, in collaboration with SBU’s Regina A. Quick Center, is presenting a performance by septet Avante as part of its 33rd season. The group performs everything from contemporary choral works to cutting edge jazz with a modern flair. The group’s founder, Kevin Badanes, hails from Olean. Through November 22 – Thomas Paquette Exhibit

If you haven’t had the chance to visit yet, the Quick Center is featuring an exhibit by acclaimed artist Thomas Paquette. “On Nature’s Terms: Paintings by Thomas Paquette Commemorating the 50th anniversary of The Wilderness Act” includes more than 60 oil and gouache paintings. The show ends Nov. 22. Admission is free.

November 27 – Turkey Trot 5K Fun Run and Walk

Get your workout in before your Thanksgiving feast! St. Bonaventure University’s free Turkey Trot 5K Fun Run and Walk begins at Murphy Auditorium on campus. November 28 – Santa Claus Lane Parade

Olean’s traditional kickoff to the holiday season is its beloved Santa Claus Lane Parade. Santa lights thousands of lights in Lincoln Park for his parade through town, which begins at 7 p.m.

November 29 – Christmas in Allegany

Be sure to stop by Santa’s House next to the Village Hall for cocoa, 6:30-8:30 p.m., for cookies and a visit with Santa. This year’s collectible ornament is a gingerbread house ($5).
