Mountain Coaster Opens May 22

By Alicia Dziak

For adventure seekers who long for high-speed thrills, the wait is over! Holiday Valley’s Sky High is opening for the season this weekend. If you’ve been there before, you know how addictive the fun is; if you haven’t made it there yet, what are you waiting for? You’ll wonder how something this unique and exciting is so close to home.

Sky High is made up of three separate areas—the Aerial Park, the Climbing Forest and the Sky Flyer Mountain Coaster—all located by the Tannenbaum Lodge.

Aerial Park

Sky High’s Aerial Park is a series of platforms, bridges and zip lines built in the trees that lead through the woods and high above the ski trails. Visitors can choose from 13 courses of varying levels of difficulty, and can squeeze as many courses as possible into each three hour session. Everyone is securely locked into the course using a lanyard system—don’t worry, everyone is equipped with the right gear and the right knowledge before they’re allowed on the course. Minimum age is seven.

Rates start at $49 per person for three hours, with group discounts available for groups of 20 or more.

In addition, a late afternoon session (3:30 to 6 p.m.) is $39 per person, and birthday party packages are also available. Reservations are required on weekends and strongly encouraged on weekdays.

Climbing Forest

The Climbing Forest is a 3-D version of a climbing wall, so unlike a traditional climbing wall, visitors can climb all around each tree as they head up to the treetops. There are 10 trees outfitted with color-coded climbing holds, with varying levels of difficulty. Guests are outfitted with a harness that is clipped to an auto belay system. Once the top is reached, or you want to come back down, just let go, and you are automatically lowered back to the ground. Minimum age is five years old and 30 pounds.

Rates start at $17 for one hour, with group rates and birthday party packages available.

Sky Flyer Mountain Coaster

The Sky Flyer is a roller coaster that spirals down the mountain through the woods. Everyone gets their own “car” and riders control its speed. Children must be at least three years old and 38 inches tall to ride with an adult (16+) or eight years old and 54 inches tall to ride alone.

Rates start at $8 for one ride.

The Aerial Park and Climbing Forest hours are as follows: May 8-June 14, open Fridays through Sundays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., May 25 (Memorial Day) Monday,11 a.m. to 6 p.m., beginning June 19, open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Mountain Coaster will open for the season on May 22. From May 22 to June 14, it will be open Fridays through Sundays, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on May 25 (Memorial Day) 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Beginning June 19, it will be open daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
