Gordon Scott has been in the lawn and landscape business for 30 years and he wouldn’t have it any other way.

Since 1983, he and his well-trained staff have been sculpting beautiful landscapes in the greater Olean area.

Starting in 1983, Scott worked with a Buffalo landscape contractor for nine years. In 1996, he graduated with academic distinction from Alfred State College’s Ornamental Horticulture & Landscape Development program, and he hasn’t looked back.

From his early beginnings as a “do anything contractor,” he gradually transitioned to lawn renovations, landscape planting renovations, and eventually migrated into landscape design, installation and maintenance.

Scott’s business has grown steadily and he now has four employees who perform lawn mowing services, plant maintenance and landscape construction.

“They are all cross-trained to work each aspect of the business,” he explained. “We rely on two to three college students each season to fill out our work roster.”

Scotts Lawn and Landscape offers full design, installation and seasonal maintenance at residential as well as commercial sites, and his loyal customers have come to rely on him and his crew year after year, in all four seasons.

“Our goal each season is to provide services to 40–50 customers with each seasonal service,” he said. “Above this, we look to complete 8-12 major landscape projects in the summer months.”

The business expanded into retail operations in 1996 when they opened a showroom as the only authorized dealer for RedMax outdoor products including line trimmers, handheld and backpack leaf blowers, and other products. They are also an authorized dealer of Unilock, a manufacturer of concrete pavers.

The business also sells Poulan Pro snow blowers, Dixon mowers, tractors and zero turn equipment, as well as Kipor power generators for residential and commercial use

Scotts is dedicated to offering quality products at accessible prices and also offer a consignment service, which allows you to sell your used equipment in order to purchase new. Just give them a call and they will explain how it works.

With a focus on the retail division, Scott said his goal is to expand in the Southern Tier “as a one-stop shop for any homeowner or contractor looking for the types of products we sell.”

“We are working with City of Olean Mayor Linda Witte on our EarthPlanter self-watering planters. They have purchased one for a trial run, with the expectations of ordering an additional 22 units to line North Union Street,” said Scott. “Additionally, I’d like to get the RedMax products into the hands of the parks and recreation departments all over the Southern Tier! I think these products meet or exceed most of the other brands.”

For the general public and do-it-yourselfers, Scotts sells bulk landscape mulch in a variety of colors, various sizes of landscape rocks, gravel, screened topsoil, compost, as well as a great variety of flagstones and fieldstones. Delivery is always available.

Scotts small engine and repair service provides prompt, reliable service of most brands of push mowers, line trimmers, chainsaws and snow blowers — they will even pick them up and bring them back.

When asked about the philosophy behind his business success, Scott said, “Truthfully, most of my employees work here because we are Christian-based in our work philosophy. My attitude and my belief is that God will supply our needs … in everything that we do, so it’s important to be thankful for your job, your health, etc. My belief is that I am at the bottom of an inverted pyramid. As it widens, it takes into account my employees, my business location, my family, my home, etc.”

Scott’s is located at 2645 Route 16 North in Olean. Hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m., and Wednesdays 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m. (appointments preferred that day). They are open most Saturdays and after-hour appointments are available.
