Dirty Duathlon and Trail Run at Holiday Valley August 31
By Alicia Dziak
August will go out with a bang if you’re one of the strong participating in the 2014 Dirty Duathlon or Dirty Bit Trail Run. Both events take place on the slopes of Holiday Valley on Aug. 31.
The Dirty Duathlon, beginning at 10 a.m., encompasses a run/bike format, starting with a one-lap, 4.2-mile trail run. At the transition/start/finish area, athletes proceed through the timing area and switch to mountain bikes to complete two similar laps on bikes. (The transition area contains racks where bikes/gear is stored during the race.) Helmets are mandatory for mountain bikers.
The Dirty Bit Trail Run is a separately scored, run-only event that starts with the Dirty Duathlon athletes at 10 a.m. and competes on the same 4.2-mile course.
The racecourse begins and ends at Holiday Valley’s Mountain Sports Center and takes athletes over steep uphills and downhills, much of it singletrack and on a variety of terrain. There are no obstacles or manmade features — the race boasts “no gimmicks…just Mother Earth’s trails” — for a truly challenging and scenic experience.
Both events are chip timed and awards will be given in the following competition groups:
Dirty Duathlon — Overall Male/Female and Overall Team; Top 3 teams in Male, Female and Co-Ed categories; Solo: U19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50+.
Dirty Bit Trail Run — Overall Male, Female and Masters M/F, Super Seniors 60+; Top three: U19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50+.
Pre-registration is $25 for the trail run, $40 for duathlon solo competitors and $50 for duathlon tag teams. T-shirts are guaranteed to the first 200 entrants and as they last on race-day. Race day registration is available beginning at 8 a.m. at the Mountain Sports Center, space permitting. Number pickup begins at 8 a.m. on race day as well.
The race concludes with a party, lunch and amazing door prizes.
