Sunday, July 13 brings the annual 6 Hours of Power mountain bike race to the slopes of Holiday Valley. Athletes will navigate 10-mile laps around the resort and other trails running through neighboring state land. The course promises to challenge racers with varying terrain, singletrack, steep climbs and demanding descents.

The race is for varying skills levels competing solo and in two-person tag teams.

“All riders must be able to anticipate riding/racing for the duration,” explained Mark Lawrence, of, the organization that puts on the race. “Many go slow, many go fast, but it’s all about pace and duration on a challenging 10-mile mountain bike course.”

According to, the course has roughly 1,100 feet of climbing per lap and a 1.5-mile climbing fire-road start that enters singletrack and plenty of it! A water station at mile 3, a short gravel connector and another 4-mile section of absolutely amazing singletrack create a flowing track. The second water station at mile 7.5 and a gravel connector sends riders towards the flowing downhill sections and rock gardens. It’s a day of world-class singletrack on sustainable, bench-cut trails that stand the test of time, leaving riders with an eerie grin for more.

The race begins with a Lemans-style running start. To ensure accurate finishes, the race is also chip timed.

After 15 years of holding the event, it’s become a tradition for the approximately 250 riders who participate, as well as spectators and mountain biking aficionados. Racers hail from all over New York State, as well as from Canada, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Vermont and all over the Northeast.

Is your interested piqued, but just not sure you’re ready to ride? No problem! Spectators are always welcome, and since the start and finish are both by the Holiday Valley Mountain Sports Center, visitors can easily cheer on their favorite racers.

Registration starts at $65 and includes a shirt and pasta party afterwards. Race day registration is also available, space permitting. Awards go to overall solo male, female and team including cash, custom trophies and prizes. Also, awards will be presented three deep plus prizes to first place finishers in a wide range of categories.

“6 Hours of Power is a great event that helps bring attention to mountain biking in our region,” said Jane Eshbaugh, Holiday Valley’s marketing director. “The endurance of these riders is amazing!”
