Full Moon Family Beach Party Aug. 8

By Alicia Dziak

Celebrate summer with music, nature and more at Allegany State Park. Join the fun on Friday, Aug. 8 for the annual Full Moon Family Beach Party, held on the shores of ASP’s Red House Lake. The event is a combined effort between the park and the Cattaraugus County Arts Council, and the result is a fantastic, family-friendly experience.

“This will be our sixth year coordinating the event with the staff from Allegany State Park,” said Heather Carroll, communications and events manager for the Cattaraugus County Arts Council. “We are always happy to work with them and we enjoy a wonderful partnership. Every other year we organize an auction during the beach party (our next one will be in 2015) and all proceeds help fund our free series of art classes in the park each summer.”

While the scenery of the lake, beach and surrounding lush forest is enough to draw a crowd, the beach party offers many other ways to entertain. (See page 4 for free workshops at the park.)

According to Carroll, this year’s event will include a performance from alternative country band, The Hootn’Anges. Originally from western New York, the four-piece band has gained considerable attention on national radio and is currently preparing for a cross-country tour.

And music’s not all the evening has to offer!

“In addition to fantastic live music, the Full Moon Family Beach Party offers a host of activities for the whole family including arts and crafts activities for kids, face painting, a limbo contest, and more,” Carroll added. “We’ll also be featuring a booth from our friends at Empire Animal Rescue Society (EARS), a local animal rescue group that offers pets for adoption.”

To cap off the evening, a fireworks display will surround the full moon— a perfect ending to a perfect summer evening at one of the area’s most popular summer hangouts.

Why mark your calendar?

“The event is 100 percent free and open to the public. Attendees are invited to bring a picnic or purchase dinner from the concession stand and settle in to enjoy the natural beauty of Allegany State Park. It’s a wonderful way to get outdoors and enjoy a family-friendly night of entertainment within the picturesque surroundings of the park,” said Carroll.

The Full Moon Beach Party runs from 6–9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 8. Admission is free (although park admission rates may apply). There is plenty of parking next to and across the street from Red House Lake.

Go for the evening, the whole day or the entire weekend! Whatever you do, don’t miss this fun event that happens once a year!
