Margaret L. Stokes, 83, of Elizabeth Street in Ellicottville, NY, passed away on November 16, 2014 at Olean General Hospital.

She was born November 9, 193, in Hamburg, NY the daughter of the late William K. and Loraine (Eastman) Laidlaw.

On January 6, 1951 she married Paul Stokes who survives. Stokes was a librarian at the Ellicottville Memorial Library for many years. She was a member of Holy Name of Mary RC Church in Ellicottville and its Altar and Rosary Society. She also was a member of Fortnightly Club and was a direct descendent of John Rogers who was a signer of the Mayflower Compact.

Besides her loving husband of 63 years, she is survived by six sons – Michael (Melanie) Stokes of Martinsburg, WV; Peter (Debbie) Stokes and William (Anna Mae) Stokes, both of Great Valley, NY; Gerard (Helen) Stokes of Ellicottville, NY; Matthew (Karen) Stokes of Cattaraugus, NY; and Andrew (Grace) Stokes of Ellicottville, NY – five daughters: Catherine (John) Earley of Ellicottville, NY; Ann Henderson of Johnstown, NY; Louise (Larry) Oeffling of Ellicottville, NY; Rachel Galway of Olean, NY; and Mary (John) Barry of Maples, NY – plus 14 grandchildren, six great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers: Father Gilbert Laidlaw and Robert Laidlaw.

A Mass of Christian Burial was said on Wednesday, November 19 at Holy Name of Mary RC Church in Ellicottville.

Burial was conducted at Holy Cross Cemetery in Ellicottville. Memorials may be made to Ellicottville Memorial Library.
