This weekend is the perfect time to visit Allegany State Park (ASP), with two special events going on May 6.

For those looking to get in some competition while navigating the trails, check out the annual Allegany Adventure Run, which uses the trails in the Art Roscoe area of the park. You can choose your workout, as there are three distances to choose from: 6K, 13K and 27K.

T-shirts are guaranteed to the first 300 who register. Race-day registration welcome. Proceeds help support the Allegany Nordic Ski Patrol and HEART Animal Shelters. For more information, visit

Looking for a great way to give back to the park? I Love My Park Day is a statewide event, organized by Parks & Trails New York (PTNY) in partnership with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) and local Friends groups, to celebrate and enhance New York’s parks and historic sites and bring visibility to the entire park system and its needs.

At ASP, some projects include painting cabins, cleaning up litter and clearing brush. Sign up today at day.

Both of these events take place on the Red House side of the Park.

While you’re there, don’t miss the all-new Red House Wetland.

Visitors can now enjoy the unique and ever-changing beauty of a wetland landscape without even having to get their feet wet. The new interpretive trail at Red House Wetland, which includes boardwalks, observation platforms, and a wildlife viewing blind, is 100 percent wheelchair accessible and offers visitors an up-close look at the plants and animals inhabiting this important ecosystem. Keep your eyes peeled for a muskrat, beaver, painted turtle, snapping turtle and a red spotted newt. Visit the wildlife viewing blind with a chance to see a wide variety of birds including mallards, wood ducks, great blue heron, osprey and even a bald eagle passing overhead. This summer more will be added including interpretative panels and nature guided tours. Come experience a landscape that can change practically overnight…you never know what you’ll see!
