Scenic Byway to Roll Through Ellicottville

The Cattaraugus County Legislature has joined Erie County and the towns of Ellicottville, Ashford and Concord, and the villages of Springville and Ellicottville in approving the required NYSDOT Byway Support resolution. This is an important achievement in the effort to expand the WNY Southtowns Scenic Byway to Cattaraugus County. On behalf of all members of the WNYSSB committee, we thank all municipal leaders and representatives of the NYSDOT for all diligent efforts, which resulted in this community-wide support.

The first part of the plan is to extend the WNYSSB from its current terminus at the intersections of US 219 and NY 39, south on US 219 through Ellicottville to an end at the Ellicottville-Great Valley town line. The second part is an extension from the intersection of NYS 240 and NY 39, south on NY 240 to NY 242 and continuing to NY 242’s intersection with US 219.

The next step in the process is to complete a Corridor Management Plan Appendix (CMPA) to our 2008 original presentation. This provides a detailed description of the route, and highlights the historical, cultural, tourist draws, and scenic resources. It explains why a traveler would want to traverse these routes. The report brings to the public’s attention the specific details of why would one desire to travel the route to Ellicottville and in addition enjoy the bliss of the town of Ashford.

Once the full CMPA is completed, it’s submitted to the NYSDOT Scenic Byway staff for review. Once it clears staff review, I’ll go to Albany to make a presentation to the State’s Scenic Byway Board. If they approve it, then we need to get a bill passed in the NYS Legislature to add the routes to the Scenic Byway program

A bill signed by Christmas is my goal … maybe a stretch, but Christmas only comes once a year. If anyone has any questions please don’t hesitate to email me at

A very grateful, Bob Lennartz, President
