Gowanda Harley-Davidson’s annual Kustom Kruise-In VI takes place Saturday, Aug. 9 at 2535 Gowanda Zoar Road in Gowanda. The annual event, celebrating classic American iron, is open free of charge to owners and enthusiasts of pre-1985 old school cool bobbers, choppers, rat rods, hot rods and gassers.
Registration is from 10 a.m. to noon, with popular voting taking place noon to 2 p.m. Awards will be handed out at 2:30 p.m., followed by a police-escorted cruise to Dunkirk Pier. It’s free too for fans to dress their best, come hang out and vote for their favorites too — garage shirts and pomade for the gents, pin up dress for the ladies.
An interview with Gowanda H-D’s marketing and sales manager Delaney Peters revealed the following.
In its sixth year, what has made the Kustom Kruise-In such a fun and popular event?
It never really set out to be anything more than a fun afternoon of “old souls” and young-at-heart customizers hanging out and having fun. In 2009 when this got started, times were tough (and still are locally for many) but customizers don’t give up their passion. At the time, we started seeing other different and amazing garage-built customs and restored classics, both cars and bikes, young customizers were doing in the area popping up at cruise nights and events. The style was a bit reminiscent of days gone by and that sparked a lot of interest across the generations. The Kustom Kruise-In became a gathering for customizers to inspire and mentor each other.
What’s new this year?
The unmistakable blues-infused, rock-a-billy sound of The Heavenly Chillbillies has been a main draw at Coney Island’s Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest for years, and now they’re bringing it to Gowanda Harley-Davidson. Since the beginning, after the show we take a nice scenic police escorted cruise over to the Dunkirk Pier. Why the Dunkirk Pier? As many local kustom and performance enthusiasts will tell you, that has always been the impromptu place to “cruise-in” throughout the years. Since this event draws from all across New York and Pennsylvania, we’re letting others discover one of our favorite spots as well.
Why pre-1985 American cars and bikes?
When a car or bike gets to be 25–30 years old, it has the perspective of a time gone by. Stories are told centered around its journeys and modifications. The average guy or gal with some tools and a little know-how really can do unique and creative designs. The Kustom Kruise-In is just a fun way to bring these artists together.
While we honor the uniquely American heritage of customizing classic American iron, we won’t discriminate though if any foreign or “metric” bikes or cars come in. We are all customizers at heart and all are welcome!
