Kids Programs at ASP

Summer means camping, hiking, swimming and exploring. What better place to do all these fun things then at Allegany State Park.

The Environmental Education and Recreation Department has always run a vast array of programs for kids such as Creek Critters, Nature Scavenger Hunts, Raccoon Rangers, Fossil Hunts to name a few.

Camping for Kids

The goal of this program is to get kids interested in the outdoors and the lifelong love of camping. Many park users attribute their love of parks due to a family member taking them on a camping trip as a child. As our society has become so reliant on electronics, this program potentially will teach kids the importance and beauty of being “unplugged”. Campers will learn how to set up a tent, build a fire with natural products, pack a backpack and of course, leave no trace ethics.  We especially want to thank Cabela’s for generously donated tents for this worthwhile program.

Creature Feature

Ever wonder what fox fur feels like? Or what porcupine’s quills or footprints look like?  Have you ever held a dragonfly or a turkey feather in your hand? These are just a few of the things kids of all ages will be able to explore this summer at the Quaker Bath House each week.  Naturalists choose their favorite animal; bring hands on items to investigate, and give you some fun facts about each one.  This ongoing program will be different every week- so visit often.

I FISH NY is a NYSDEC program to increase fishing participation and awareness of the outstanding fishing opportunities in New York State. Our program is geared toward kids. The DEC supplies rods, reels, hooks and bobbers. With so many places to cast your line in the Allegany Region, this program will “hook” you on the joys, challenges and excitement of fishing. Children fish free with a licensed adult.  Check out for more information about fishing in NYS.
