West Valley, NY – James J. Gerwitz ,76, of Irish Hill Rd passed away Saturday July 19, 2014 at the Olean General Hospital.

He was born September 6, 1937 the son of the late Lawrence and Margaret (Benz) Gerwitz.

On August 22, 1964 he married the former Margaret” Peggy” Kuhn who survives.

Mr. Gerwitz was a self employed carpenter and also Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds at Ellicottville Central School.

He was a veteran having served in the US Army in Germany.He was a member of Holy Name of Mary RC Church in Ellicottville and one of it’s Trustees.He was an Usher, Eucharistic Minister and a member of the Usher’s Club at Holy Name of Mary.He also was active in the Knights of Columbus and was an organ donor.He also was a very loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle and friend.

Besides his loving wife of 49 years he is survived by 4 sons Lawrence Gerwitz of Wheatfield, NY, James (Chris) Gerwitz of Sanborne, NY, Joseph Gerwitz and Andrew Gerwitz both of Ellicottville, NY and a daughter Rita (Rick) Browning of Sherman, NY and  7 grandchildren and 1 great grandson.He is also survived by a brother Paul (Betty) Gerwitz of California and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother Donald Gerwitz and 2 sisters Mildred Hoffman and Doris Ebert.

Friends may call at the Mentley Funeral home Inc 411 Rock City Street in Little Valley, NY on Wednesday July 23, 2014 from 4-8pm.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be said Thursday July 24, 2014 at 11am from Holy Name of Mary RC Church in Ellicottville, NY.

Burial with military honors will be in St. John’s Cemetery in West Valley,NY

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Ellicottville Vo. Fire dept.
