Holiday Valley’s Head Golf Professional, Steven Carney, was named by the Western New York Professional Golf Association as the 2015 PGA Golf Professional of the Year. The WNY PGA is 240 members strong and covers the area from Erie, PA to Syracuse, NY. The award was presented on Monday, Oct. 26 at the Seneca Niagara Casino in Buffalo.

Carney’s award was based on his promotion of the sport of golf, his membership and service on the Board of Directors, his commitment to education of the sport and his skills in golf retail. His 42 years in the golf business has given him a vast amount of experience in all aspects of the sport.

Carney began his career as a caddie at Crag Burn in 1973, attained his PGA Professional status in 1980 and was elected the 144th PGA Master Professional in 1995. Carney is currently the Director of Golf and Summer Operations at Holiday Valley Resort, a position he has held for the past 12 years. During the winter months, he is employed at The Landings Yacht, Golf and Tennis Club in Fort Myers, Florida. Carney’s work history also includes Elma Meadows Golf Course in Elma, NY, Riverside Golf Course in Cambridge Springs, PA and Crag Burn Club in East Aurora, NY.

In addition to the WNY PGA Golf Professional of the Year, Carney also received the 2015 Horton Smith Award for outstanding continuing contributions to the education of the WNY section members for the second year in a row. Other awards in Carney’s past include the WNY PGA Merchandiser of the Year award in 1993, 2007, 2009, 2013 and 2014 and the WNY PGA Junior Golf Award in 2007. Carney served on the WNY PGA Section Board of Directors from 1995 to 1996 and 2013 to 2015.

Carney has a special talent of hosting excellent golf events from the traditional annual Italian American Charity Tournament to fun events that introduce new golfers to the sport. Carney has hosted WNY Section Pro Am tournaments for 20 years, starting at Riverside Golf Course from 1987 to 1994 and then at Holiday Valley from 2004 to 2015. His lesson schedule is extremely busy as he teaches over 400 lessons per year including juniors, beginner ladies and seniors.
