From Oct. 14-24, Springville Elementary School (SES) students collected new hats to donate to children with cancer. The project was a joint effort between SES Student Council and Earth Scouts of Western New York, who prepared for the drive by making flyers, posters and decorating collection boxes that were placed inside the school. Additionally, the school held “Crazy Hat Day” on Oct. 17, in which students wore their craziest hat to school to promote the event.

This is the third year the hat drive has taken place at SES. In its previous two years, about 400 hats were collected. This year, 711 hats were collected!

Earth Scouts also organizes a hat drive at Union Pleasant Elementary School in Hamburg.

The SES hat drive concluded on Oct. 24, and a few days later, students and teachers assembled to package up the hats with ribbons and tags. The hats will be donated to Women and Children’s Hospital in Buffalo, and distributed to local children with cancer.

A big thank you goes out to everyone who helped make this hat drive a huge success!
