The village of Ellicottville will be filled with witches, pirates, zombies, vampires and more costumed runners this Saturday for the 6th annual EVL Halloween Half Marathon and 5k.
Both events begin and end in the heart of the village at 5 Monroe St. The half begins at 11 a.m. and the 5k begins at 11:15. Running in the half marathon will take you on 13.1 miles of beautiful countryside roads outside Ellicottville.
The race will also benefit charity partners the Ellicottville Sports Boosters, a group dedicated to getting local children involved in athletics, as well as the local food pantry. Participants are invited to run in costume and enjoy other Halloween related activities, but this is by no means mandatory.
One of the most important things you’ll want to think about while planning your costume is chafing. Think about how your costume is going to wear over 13 miles.
Please do not wear items that may danger you or other runners or items that will make you feel colder. Metal pieces, such as bracelets and earrings, may feel especially cold at freezing temperatures. Remember, it can be cold, so dress appropriately so you can have fun!
You are allowed to have hats, masks and carried items, but your race number bib must be placed on the front of your costume and be worn at all times.
Race participants will receive custom-designed medals as well as men’s or women’s shirts for both half-marathon and 5k finishers. These are high-quality Bella & Canvas brand fitted t-shirts for participants, so if you like a looser fit, order up in sizing or select a unisex shirt. You can also upgrade your event shirt to a quarter-zip long sleeve.
Many Ellicottville merchants get involved with the EVL Half Halloween excitement and offer great discounts that weekend for runners, which athletes will receive in the race packet.
The EVL Half after-party at Ellicottville Brewing Company is always a great time with Ellicottville entertainment ramping up the music while the athletes enjoy a craft beer or two and try to win some of the many wonderful give away prizes from businesses around Ellicottville.
The athletes also can participate in the EVL Half Costume Contest. Awards will be given to the best costumes for the following categories: Best Group – Two or more people; Best individual; Funniest; Scariest; Most Girly; Best Kid and Best in Show.
So grab your friends, pick out your costume and get ready to run. Runners of all abilities are encouraged to join the fun.
If you haven’t signed up yet, there is still space in both events, but they are going fast. For more info, check out the “EVL Halloween Half Marathon” Facebook page or visit www.evlhalf.com.
