The Ellicottville Eagles have started their second year in competitive High School Varsity

Alpine Skiing. This is the only team of its kind in Section 6 sports and it includes both boys’ and girls’ teams.

The Alpine team is being coached by Kelly Fredrickson for the second year and the team has grown from just a few students to now seven strong. It looks to continue its growth in the coming years with more and more students taking interest in the sport.

In their first meet of the season, the girls’ varsity team was led by senior Hannah Doro, who finished 1st overall, followed closely by Shelby Toth who finished 2nd. The boys’ varsity team was led by Jesse Both who finished 1st overall, while Alex Paddock took 3rd, Adrian Deorbe took 6th, Lucas Foster took 7th and Victor Reiman finished in 9th place. Coach Fredrickson was very pleased with the teams’ first meet.

In boys’ basketball, the Eagles varsity team finished the week 1-1 with a heartbreaking overtime loss to Forestville last Friday night. The Eagles made it to the overtime period when freshman Austin Grinols hit a buzzer-beating 3 pointer to send them into the extra frame, but the Hornets were too much for the Eagles and they lost 72-66.

Grinols led the Eagles in scoring on the night with 21 points, followed by Jonas Hurlburt with 18 and Phalla Musall with 13 points. On the defensive side of the team, the Eagles were led by freshmen Elliot Bowen and Griffin Chudy.

The Eagles then returned to West Valley Monday night and walked away with a home win over the Pine Valley Panthers 53-45. This time Chudy and Bowen put the team on their offensive & defensive backs and led the team on both sides of the court. Bowen had 22 points, double digit rebounds and 7 blocked shots, Chudy followed closely behind with 16 points and double digit rebounds. Musall chipped in 10 points on the night. The Eagles take on Fillmore and North Collins to close out the rest of the week.

In girls’ varsity action, the Eagles faced off against the Forestville Hornets last week and came away with a 44-20 win. The Eagles were led by sophomore Marisa Hamilton with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Alexis Woodin and freshman Evie Cortez aided in the victory. The Lady Eagles take on North Collins this week as their lone match up.

The ECS 5th and 6th grade boys travel basketball team took on the Cuba Rushford Rebels on Saturday afternoon in Cuba and came away with a convincing 49-21 victory. The Eagles were led by Wyatt Chudy and Clayton Rowland, while Leif Jimerson led the team with double-digit assists on the day.
