On Saturday, September 7, community members are invited to attend the 5th annual Art of Expression Recovery Rally at Jamestown Community College’s Olean campus. Held at the Cutco Theater from 11:00am-2:00pm, the rally will showcase and celebrate the artistic achievements of individuals in recovery and those affected by recovery.

The event will include a walk, art gallery of local art, live music, and booths from local organizations promoting holistic wellness including Venture Forthe, the Parent Education Program, AKT Combatives Academy, and Therapeutic Massage. There will be chicken dinners for sale, fresh lemonade, and refreshments from Jared’s Treats available for purchase.  There will also be family entertainment, face painting, and activities throughout the day.

The Cattaraugus County Arts Council serves as one of many regional sponsors for the Rally and Executive Director Anne Conroy-Baiter spoke of the event. “The Recovery Rally is a celebratory demonstration of the way this community helps those in need. Multiple organizations and sponsors have come together to show support as well as celebrate the important role of the arts in recovery. The arts–whether visual, performing, or literary–have long been recognized as an important source of healing, stress relief, accomplishment, and joy. We hope the Rally will increase community acceptance, tolerance and compassion as well as open doors for those in need of support.”

The schedule of events will begin at 11am with a welcome from event organizers followed by an African drum demonstration. The program will continue with a group walk that showcases the pride members of the Recovery Community have, along with signs demonstrating “what Recovery means to them” through downtown Olean.  The walk will leave from the Cutco Theater at 11:15am with musical accompaniment from Faith Tanner. Afternoon entertainment begins at 12pm with performances from Ade Adu, followed by selections from Joelle Wolters and Megan Prosser and concluding with “A Chord of Three Strands” led by Mike and April Prutsman.

Executive Director of CAReS, Inc., Laura Elliott-Engel, states that, “The Recovery Task Force in Cattaraugus County has committed for over five years to expand our communities’ understanding of recovery and wellness.  This is a tremendous opportunity to celebrate life, music, and great food”.

This event is coordinated by the Cattaraugus Recovery Task Force sponsored CAReS, Inc., Cattaraugus County Arts Council, Cattaraugus County Dept. of Community Services, Faces and Voices of Recovery, Friends of Recovery-New York, Healthy Cattaraugus County: A Drug Free Coalition, Housing Options Made Easy, Inc., Mental Health Association, OASAS, The ReHabilitation Center, Southern Tier Recovery Activities Without Walls, SAMHSA, and the YMCA.
