The Winery of Ellicottville has put two of the best flavors on earth – bacon and wine – on the menu for a Bacon Wrapped Wine Pairing, scheduled for Friday, Nov. 8 at 6:30 p.m. The event features a selection of the Winery’s very own award-winning wines along with savory bacon-themed appetizers prepared by Chef John Haley.

The casual event also includes a winery tour and a complimentary glass of wine following dessert. Reservations are required by calling 699-1055. Tickets cost $25; $20 for Wine Club members.

The Bacon Wrapped Wine Pairing is the latest in a long list of events sponsored by the Winery. The recent “Wine & Wags,” a fundraiser for the Cattaraugus County SPCA, was a huge success, said Bridget Dean, board chair of the SPCA. “We are hoping to make it an annual event and are already looking forward to next year!”

Of course, you don’t need an event to find a reason to visit the Winery at 14 Monroe Street. It’s a great place to visit any time. Just by stepping into the store, you enter a world of award-winning wines.

In just the last year alone, the EVL White won a Double Gold in the Indy International Wine Competition, EVL Red won Gold in the Finger Lakes Wine Competition, and EVL Blue won Silver in the Florida State Fair Wine Competition, among others. Wines are displayed with their numerous awards on the large tasting bar running alongside one wall of the Winery.

Running along the opposite wall of the Winery are large windows giving customers a glimpse into the Winery’s operation.

“We do everything right here, except the crushing and pressing of the grapes, which we do at another location because we don’t have the space here,” explained Dominic Spicola, co-owner of the Winery with son-in-law Sam Sheehy. “We do all the bottling and labeling, and also distribute our wines to 18 wine and liquor stores throughout Western New York.”

Also in this back room are several large tanks, including a new one that holds 1,100 gallons, and 16 wine barrels, each used for only three to four seasons to ensure premium oak flavor.

The selection of delicious wines ranges from sweet, to dry, to fruity. If you’re not sure what you like, or just want to narrow down your options, tastings are available daily. For just $3, you can try six different wines and the staff is knowledgeable and helpful when trying to discover wines that suit your palate. Tasting packages are also available that include specialty chocolates made just for pairing with the Winery’s wines.

“I generally like sweet wines, so it was great being able to sample so many different wines geared toward people with tastes similar to mine,” said customer Judy Emerling of Springville.

The Winery, of course, is a great place to do some holiday shopping. The wide selection of wines is complemented by an array of wine accessories and other fun gifts. Another gift idea for your favorite wine connoisseur is a membership in the all new Wine Club in which members receive four automatic selections per year via mail or for pickup at the Winery. Members receive benefits such as waived tasting fees, discounts, recipes and more, and the cost to join is free. Different membership levels are available to suit individual needs.

And, if you’re looking for a fun place to hold your next event, the Winery is a great location for parties of up to 30 people in their second-floor banquet room. “We can provide a caterer, or you can bring in your own food,” says Spicola. “Just give us a call to make your reservations!”
