evltourneyOn May 30, 2014, the second annual EVL Basketball Tourney tipped off! This is the second year the event was held, and what a huge success it was! The 2014 event was a huge improvement from the year before. The tournament lasted a whole weekend, starting on Friday, May 30, and lasting until Sunday evening June 1.

The EVL Basketball Tourney is a 5-on-5 basketball tournament. Fourteen teams signed up this year, which is two more than the previous year. More than 120 of the area’s finest basketball players participated. Players and teams came from all over the area to play in this second tournament. Players flocked from Fredonia, Pioneer, Arcade, Jamestown, Olean, Bradford, Frewsburg, Cattaraugus, Randolph, West Valley, Salamanca, and of course, several players from Ellicottville.

Event coordinators Kohl Halloran, Bradley Poole, and Greg Smith worked hard for over three months to spread the word about this tournament. The number of sponsors more than doubled from the previous year! There were a total of 25 local businesses that were generous enough to donate and sponsor the EVL Tourney, including Madigan’s, Wildwood, Broad Street Smokeshop, The Barn Restaurant, Haley’s Auto Shop, Ellicottville Pharmacy, Halloran Electric, Rustix Salon, Great Hair, the Clinton Restaurant, Ole Hickory Tavern, EVL Ink and many, many more!

The biggest, and most important part of the tournament, was that this year, unlike last year, it was a benefit for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. A total of $2,100 was donated to the foundation. The money came from all of the sponsors, our very own concession stands and also the very generous donations from all of the spectators who came to watch the tournament.

Kohl, Brad, and Greg were not alone on the setup and completion of this tournament. They would like to thank Tim and Debbie Halloran for working hard on the concession stands all weekend. Tim and Debbie made terrific grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, purchased from Save-A-Lot (another sponsor) all weekend long. A thank you also goes to Greg Herrick on the help with everything he did, including loaning us his tent and tables for the entire weekend.

All the volunteer referees were a huge help including Rigel Johnson, Jake Hannahs, Mike Brady, David Erlandson, and many more. Jane Hamilton did a terrific job on the music all weekend.

We would also like to thank the Village of Ellicottville for letting us use the park to hold our event, providing us with garbage cans, and keeping the park looking nice and clean. Finally, all the others who volunteered to help with scorekeeping, clean up, and all the other needs. We greatly appreciate all the help from everyone and want you to know your help did not go unnoticed.

We are so amazed with all of the positive responses we have gotten about our tournament, and cannot believe how big this tournament has become. We would like to congratulate Team BDA on beating Team Smith in the championship game this year. Also, we want to thank all of the participants for playing, and team captains for organizing their teams. All of us are excited to do it again next year, and hope to make it even bigger and better! We hope to see all of you again next year.
